san francisco The employees of the technology group Apple get a salary increase. The company will raise hourly wages in the US to at least $22 an hour. German employees would also receive higher remuneration. Apple confirmed this to the Handelsblatt.

An Apple spokesman said, “By nurturing and retaining the best team members in the world, we can deliver the best and most innovative products and services to our customers.”

Salaries would therefore increase by 45 percent compared to 2018. According to Handelsblatt information, however, a starting salary of $20 an hour was already standard in some Apple US shops. That would be the most recent wage increase at 10 percent.

Apple didn’t say how salaries will increase in other parts of the company. Recently, many US technology companies had announced lavish wage increases.

Apple: Salary increase but also office duty

One reason why Apple wants to pay its employees better could be the planned formation of unions by employees. At an Apple store in New York, they had collected signatures to organize themselves into a union. Workers at stores in Atlanta, Maryland and Kentucky followed suit.

At the same time, many Americans are suffering from the high inflation rate. In April, consumer prices increased by 8.3 percent compared to the same period last year. In addition, there is a shortage of workers in many areas. Unemployment in the US is currently around 3.6 percent.

Employees had recently complained that Apple wants to introduce office requirements. Originally, the group had asked the workforce to work in the offices three days a week from May. Apple CEO Tim Cook had argued that this would encourage exchange and creativity. After the recent increase in the number of corona cases in the USA, Apple relaxed the rules again.

In an open letter, Apple employees sharply criticized office duty: “Stop treating us like schoolchildren who have to be told when to be where and what homework to do,” the letter said The Board.

With Ian Goodfellow, Apple had even lost the head of the machine learning team. In his farewell, the renowned researcher cited office duty as one of the reasons for his departure, as reported by the US portal The Verge. A little later it became known that Goodfellow was recruited by the search engine operator Google.
