Algeria wants to supply more gas: Africa’s energy for Europe

Paris French President Emmanuel Macron stayed in Algeria for three days. The official aim of his “friendly visit” was to improve the tense and historically charged relations with the former colony. In the background, however, the question was not least: Can France arm itself against the energy crisis in winter with more gas imports from the North African country?

Since Macron’s return at the weekend, there have been increasing indications that negotiations between French energy supplier Engie and Algerian state-owned Sonatrach are likely to be concluded soon.

According to French media reports, Algeria could increase its gas supplies to France by 50 percent. The government in Paris did not initially confirm the information. However, government spokesman Olivier Véran said the results of talks between the two countries on an energy partnership would be announced “soon”.
