According to the UN Report, 75% of the People See Violence Against Women as Legitimate

The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) recently published a report called Gender Norms Index (GSNI). The report presented data on gender biases worldwide from four different categories: political, educational, economic and physical.

Covering 85% of the global population, the index shows that there has been no development in the world’s prejudice against women in the last 10 years. According to this 9 out of 10 men and women have basic prejudices against women owner. On the other hand, almost half of the total population think that men are better political leaders than women, and two out of every five people think that men are better managers. When we look at Turkey, we do not see very encouraging results.

91.08% of Turkey is biased

According to the data created by the United Nations based on the survey responses; 91.08% of people in Turkey have prejudice. If we look at the category 70.02% of political prejudice, 32.68% of education, 65.65% of economy and 75.57% of physical integrity. We see it appearing.

The political category includes issues such as “men being better political leaders and equal rights”, education “the university is more important to men than women”, the economic part is “men have more rights at work and better managers, and finally physical integrity”. reproductive rights and partner violence”.

A significant part of the public sees violence against a partner as legitimate.

Speaking to BBC Turkish regarding the report, UNDP Turkey Gender Equality Analyst Aslı Çoban stated that the report was prepared in five-year periods through periodic surveys. Drawing attention to the category of physical integrity in which violence against women is addressed, Çoban stated that the rate five years ago was 75.82%, and now this rate is 75.57%. not much progress and negative norms persist. stated.

According to the United Nations report, prejudices are more common where women are low in leadership positions. It is also pointed out that such prejudices are the driving force of the obstacles women face in their lives.
