the Ambassador of Ukraine Andrei Melnyk in Berlin has the German commitment to Delivery of 5000 protective helmets welcomed to his country, but for completely inadequately explained. “We are glad that we can see at least the beginning of a change in thinking,” he said on Wednesday in a Reuters TV interview on the Ministry of Defense’s announcement that it would deliver 5,000 helmets. “What we do indeed need are primarily defensive weapons,” said Melnyk.
It was never about the number 5000 anyway, although one is grateful for it. “We now have to equip the reservists. It’s about hundreds of thousands of people who are being trained day and night.” These people needed necessary equipment immediately. “We also urgently need weapons to defend against a possible attack.” Melnyk spoke of a “symbolic gesture” by the federal government. This is just a drop in the bucket compared to what his country needs. He is counting on western partners to convince Germany to supply Ukraine with defensive weapons. It is also “nonsense” to claim that one can wage aggressive wars with anti-tank weapons.
Ukraine is all about self-defense. Melnyk sharply criticized the federal government’s reference to civilian aid for the country. “If we face the threat of a new war, then we don’t need advice from Berlin on how to increase energy efficiency in houses that may be destroyed or bombed tomorrow.”
