A triumph for a cinema of mindfulness – which also leaves you at a loss

The question of what art actually is and what we expect from it accompanies you every day at a film festival; It has also sparked discussions and arguments over the past ten days. Nicolas Philibert gives an unconventional answer with his documentary “Sur l’Adamant” about a floating day clinic on the Seine, a meeting point for people with mental illnesses – and an artistic streak.

The Golden Bear, which the French director was awarded for the sensitive, patiently observed “Sur l’Adamant” on Saturday evening, does not necessarily have to be understood as a statement for art. Rather, it belongs in the Berlinale tradition of a socially committed cinema of mindfulness. It is a strangely inconsistent decision by Kristen Stewart’s jury, which somehow also fits this vintage, which offers a lot of good will but only a few special films.
