Berlin The deadline for filing property tax returns is next Tuesday. Nevertheless, many property owners in Germany have still not submitted a declaration. Up to and including January 25, the rate of declarations received nationwide was 64.3 percent, the Federal Ministry of Finance told the Handelsblatt on request.

Around 55.8 percent of the tax returns submitted to date were therefore transmitted electronically via the Elster tax portal. In addition, around 8.5 percent of the total expected declarations of assessment were received by the tax offices on paper.

This means that millions of tax returns are still missing shortly before the deadline. As a result of the property tax reform passed in 2019, new methods for calculating property tax will take effect from 2025, and almost 36 million properties will have to be revalued.
