A reality check on Robert Habeck’s climate plans

Berlin The new federal government wants to speed up the climate change: The expansion of wind and solar systems as well as the power grid should finally be accelerated. But is that even possible? What does this cost? And above all: who pays for it in the end? Handelsblatt Editor-in-Chief Sebastian Matthes asked Federal Economics Minister Robert Habeck (Greens) these questions at the Handelsblatt Energy Summit.

Handelsblatt editor Kathrin Witsch then carried out the reality check with Markus Krebber, the head of Germany’s largest energy producer RWE.

While there is no doubt that Germany needs ambitious plans to become carbon neutral, the Federal Republic is still far behind on its goals. At the same time, the situation on the energy market poses unforeseeable challenges for climate plans: The reason for this is the record prices for electricity, oil and gas, while at the same time an impending military escalation between Russia and Ukraine and the dispute over the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline are causing additional uncertainty.

In the new episode of Handelsblatt Green, you can find out what politicians and business think must happen in order for the energy transition to finally reach its goal.
