A new front and an almost insurmountable problem

The Ukrainian counter-offensive has now been running for a good three weeks, and Kiev’s troops have not yet succeeded in gaining any major territory. The main reason for this is the massively expanded Russian defense systems. Military expert Franz-Stefan Gady said in an interview with the Tagesspiegel at the beginning of the week that what you see on various front sections is a slow, methodical advance, characterized by wear and tear on both sides.

Ukraine is still holding back most of its Western-trained brigades. The “main blow” is yet to come, said Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov. But what has Ukraine achieved so far and where, and what are the problems?

Probably the most dynamic development is currently taking place on both banks of the Dnipro River in Cherson. After the Kakhovka Dam was blown up, the water there is slowly retreating, with the floods having weakened the Russian defenses on the east bank in particular.
