“Mourir pour Dantzig?” This controversial question, this catchphrase, was circulated in 1939 by the extreme right-wing French politician Marcel Déat. In English: Should you really give your life for Danzig? It was about whether France should help Poland militarily in the war against Germany. In the end, war was declared from Paris.
Today, the willingness to help probably doesn’t go that far; NATO wants to stay out of the military in Ukraine for good reason. But there is still an extreme scenario that is not yet fully understood and has therefore not fully arrived on the markets: Freezing for Kyiv?
If the West consistently does without gas and oil from Russia, it will be cold in Germany in the coming winter, and some industrial companies are likely to have problems.
Does it come to that? And if so, would the economic consequences have been sufficiently taken into account on the capital markets? Those are the key questions now.
