Berlin, Brussels, Washington In a children’s hospital in Kharkiv, Federal Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) recently told what she said to her young daughters before leaving for Ukraine: “The bravest people I know in the whole world live there.”
But the Russian invaders cannot be pushed back with courage alone. “We need tanks – not ten, not twenty, but several hundred,” Andriy Yermak, chief of staff of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, wrote on the short message service Telegram on Monday. And indeed, NATO and the EU also estimate that Ukraine can only withstand a spring offensive by the Russians with additional weapons.
A dispute over the delivery of German Leopard tanks has been escalating for days. The combat vehicles developed during the Cold War could decisively strengthen Ukraine militarily.
