Berlin At the latest since the Chinese government’s violent reaction to the visit of the outgoing speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan in August, not only many companies have been dealing more intensively with the conflict over the island. The most pressing question: Is it realistic that China will one day attack Taiwan – and if so, when? Which scenarios are discussed and why.
What is the Taiwan conflict about?
The Chinese leadership regards Taiwan as part of China’s territory, although the country has never been part of the People’s Republic founded in 1949 and has its own democratically elected government and laws.
However, Beijing does not recognize Taiwan’s independence and is demanding the “one China principle” from other governments. The People’s Republic is thus demanding that states that want to maintain official diplomatic relations with China not have such relations with Taiwan.
