Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun: We will surpass Apple in three years

As it is known, before being blacklisted by the US in 2019, Huawei was the third largest smartphone manufacturer in the world after Apple and Samsung. The company, which is the best-selling brand in China, lost its weight in the sector with the enforcement of the sanctions and moved away from its old days.

When this is the case, a fierce competition has started to fill the gap of Huawei in both Chinese and global markets. While Xiaomi has become the world’s third largest smartphone manufacturer by signing successful business globally, the situation has become even more complicated in China.

According to Counterpoint Research data, as of the fourth quarter of 2021, Apple surpassed Vivo to become China’s largest smartphone maker with a 23 percent market share. Xiaomi, on the other hand, could not reach the targets it set in its own country and ranked fifth after Apple, Vivo, OPPO and Honor with a 13 percent market share.

A new statement about the company’s future plans came from Lei Jun, CEO of Xiaomi, which could not fully reflect its success in global markets to its own country. Defining the company’s situation in the Chinese market and its competition with Apple as a life and death battle, Jun used the following statements;

We aim to be a direct competitor to Apple in terms of product and experience, and overtake Apple in the next three years to become China’s largest smartphone manufacturer.

Finally, let’s mention that Xiaomi aims to open 20 thousand new stores in China in the next three years and to invest approximately 16 billion dollars in R&D in five years.
