Will the Sefe nationalization now follow?

SEFE GmbH could be nationalized, but a reaction from Russia is expected.

Berlin The federal government is considering nationalizing the second major German gas importer: after Uniper, the federal government could soon also take over Sefe. Sefe, more precisely: Sefe Securing Energy for Europe GmbH, based in Berlin, traded as Gazprom Germania until June. After Russia’s attack on Ukraine, it was placed under the trusteeship of the Federal Network Agency in order to ensure security of gas supply in Germany.

But trusteeship is not seen as a permanent solution in government circles. It serves its purpose, but is not stable in the long term. Nevertheless, nationalization is not as easy to implement as in the Uniper case. “From a purely operational and economic point of view, full nationalization – including ownership – makes sense at Sefe,” government circles said.
