Why the youth are disappointed in the adults

Berlin How does Generation Z tick? What defines today’s 12 to 27 year olds? The “Spiegel” describes them as “the system crashers”. Some personnel consultants speak of the “Generation Snowflake” because they are so resilient. Thomas Sigmund, 56-year-old head of politics at the Handelsblatt newspaper, was intrigued: “I wanted to know what’s really going on with this, you could say, myth. A friend told me to just have a chat with his daughter.”

Floriane Kerzmann is 15 years old, a high school student in Heidelberg and an independent member of the local youth council. Once Sigmund and Kerzmann met in a Berlin café, most of the conversation took place via WhatsApp because of the distance.

A big advantage, as it turned out. Sigmund: “We both had a day or two to think about what we expect from work, why we don’t listen to each other better and how we deal with empty promises in the corona pandemic and the climate crisis.”
