Why electricity consumers in the north pay more than 300 euros more

Berlin The serious differences in electricity grid charges within Germany are causing growing resentment in some federal states. Brandenburg’s Economics Minister Jörg Steinbach (SPD) fears that support for renewable energies will dwindle as a result: “I can hardly explain to people that they should welcome new wind farms if they are confronted with increasing grid fees, which are already among the count the highest in the republic,” Steinbach told the Handelsblatt. The divergence in electricity grid fees is thus dampening the acceptance of renewables.

Steinbach is thus pointing to a development that is affecting federal states in which the expansion of renewable energies is making rapid progress. These are in particular the federal states in the north and north-east of the republic.
