Germany and the fear of fracking.
Dusseldorf What seems unthinkable in Germany is suddenly becoming possible in Great Britain: the new British Prime Minister Liz Truss has announced an end to the moratorium on so-called fracking. In just six months, gas is to be retrieved from British soil using the controversial technology – and thus make the kingdom less dependent on gas imports.
In this country, such a decision seems impossible so far – despite all the insolvencies of gas-intensive companies and concerns of private heating customers about the lack of gas and high energy prices. Fracking has been banned in Germany for environmental reasons since 2017.
Now, however, calls are getting louder in Germany to consider fracking again. The deputy chairman of the state-appointed fracking expert commission, Holger Weiß, recently said about the rejection of fracking: “You can actually only explain it with ideological reservations. There is no factual basis for that.”
