Why China presents itself as a Ukraine mediator

Beijing, Berlin, Washington When government representatives from Germany and China meet in Berlin on Tuesday for the seventh German-Chinese government consultations, they will also discuss an issue that has been weighing heavily on relations between the two countries for months: China’s pro-Russian stance in the war of aggression against Ukraine.

An attempt by China to calm things down in May can be considered largely a failure. Special envoy Li Hui, who was sent by Beijing on a European tour, had little new information to offer, according to people familiar with the talks. In his talks on the Ukraine war in Berlin, Prague and Paris, he only recited Beijing’s already known positions – and above all scolded the USA. China wants to separate Europe from the USA and has repeatedly made this very clear, not only in talks with the German government.
