Berlin, Dusseldorf So far, Munich criminal defense attorney Frank Eckstein has been following the Wirecard trial against former CEO Markus Braun and two other executives from the sidelines. His client, former Asia board member Jan Marsalek, is not among the accused. He has been in hiding for three years – and is considered one of the most wanted men in the world.
While Marsalek is allegedly hiding in Russia and Braun is brought from custody to court week after week, Eckstein is sitting in his office in an old building not far from Munich’s Theresienwiese. A seven-page letter that he wrote for the court on behalf of his client catapulted the lawyer from a supporting role to the focus of the fraud process on Tuesday.
