Which insurances are important?

Who pays the damage?

Not all insurance makes sense. Which ones you really need and which ones are optional.

Munich 84 million people live in Germany and, according to the insurance association GDV, together they have over 460 million insurance contracts. This also includes compulsory insurance such as health insurance and motor vehicle liability insurance. But when it comes to the question of which insurance policies are urgently needed, opinions differ. Many would rather have more than too little security, a sentiment that insurance companies are all too fond of promoting.

Experts like Julia Böhne see it differently and argue with the wallet. The spokeswoman for the Federation of Insureds (BdV) recommends repeating this guiding principle when insuring. “Only insure yourself against risks that could jeopardize your standard of living.”

The Handelsblatt has compiled a list of the risks and what insurance is needed to avoid being underinsured. There may be other types of insurance that make sense in individual life situations, but most should have taken out the policies discussed here. Or at least know when they become important.
