Which infrastructure could now become the target of an attack

Berlin After the alleged sabotage of the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines, a debate has broken out about which areas of critical infrastructure in Germany could be possible targets for attacks. The CDU security politician Roderich Kiesewetter told the Handelsblatt that the danger of such attacks had increased since the attack on Ukraine, which violated international law. “The threat in Germany is growing.”

Kiesewetter classifies as “particularly endangered targets” what is of particular importance for the state and society. In addition to attacks on underwater cables for communication, there are many other pipelines that are important for the energy supply in Europe, such as oil pipelines, but also power plants or refineries, explained the CDU MP, who is also vice-chairman of the parliamentary control committee that oversees the secret services controlled by the federal government.

“In addition, there is in particular the risk of cyber attacks on power grids with widespread power failures, data centers, hospitals, emergency systems and many other facilities,” explains Kiesewetter. The assessments are not made out of thin air.
