Which Earned More in a Year?

After the situations we have been in for the last year, we decided to make a strange comparison: Would you have earned more if you bought an iPhone or Bitcoin last year?

The great economic problems that have been experienced in our country for more than a year have appeared in all areas of life. The price increases due to the dollar and inflation, of course, deeply hurt the technology sector. Last year Offered for sale from 11,999 TL Even the price of the iPhone 13 is for these reasons. It climbed to 27,999 TL.

Technological gadgets are now due to their high prices. As it began to be seen as an ‘investment tool’, today we decided to make an interesting comparison. Which one would have made more profit if you bought it on the day the iPhone 13 went on sale (October 1) last year: iPhone or Bitcoin?

Let’s look at Bitcoin first:

October 1, 2021:

  • Bitcoin price: hovering in the $43,000 – $48,000 range (We get 45,500 on average)
  • Dollar rate: 8.58 TL (CBRT exchange rate archive)
  • TL price: 402.220 TL

Today (October 10, 2022):

  • Bitcoin price: 19.400 (as of the time of writing)
  • Dollar rate: 18.58 TL
  • TL price: 360,452 TL (-41.768 TL)

Now let’s look at the iPhone:

iphone 13

To make the iPhone comparison more understandable, let’s first assume that we spent that money on the iPhone instead of 1 Bitcoin on October 1st. On October 1st with 402.220 TL We could buy 33 iPhone 13 128 GB. So, what is the price of 33 iPhones today?

October 1, 2021:

  • iPhone 13 128 GB price (each): 11.999 TL
  • 33 iPhone 13 128 GB price: 395,967 TL

Today:

  • iPhone 13 128 GB price (each): 27.999 TL
  • 33 iPhone 13 128 GB price: 923,967 TL (+528,000 TL)

As you can see from the chart above, if you had invested in Bitcoin last year, you would have lost most of your money even though the dollar had more than doubled. But if you had bought 33 iPhone 13s instead, you could have made more than double the profit. Even if you sell the phones as second hand, the profit in TL basis would still be many times higher than Bitcoin.

Of course, it should be noted that this profit does not mean much in real terms. As a result, this “profit” occurred due to the depreciation of TL. In other words, what you can do with 395 thousand TL a year ago, It’s the same as what you can do with today’s 900 thousand TL. You would have just saved your money…
