Competition in the processor market is growing. Before 2nm processors were released yet, TSMC published a road map for 1nm processors. However, Intel, TSMC’s biggest rival in this regard, is likely to reach this goal much earlier. On the TSMC side, 2nm technology will be slightly delayed. In this case, it seems that the first iPhone models to use 2nm processors will be the 17 series.

2nm TSMC processors may not catch up with iPhone 16

The processor market is more active than ever after the chip crisis. Although China’s embargo for rare earths has impacted the market, TSMC has already prepared its targets. In fact, in the target table that emerged, the target set for 2nm processors came to the fore. Accordingly, 2nm TSMC processors will be ready in 2025.

Of course, there is still the possibility of using 2nm processors in the iPhone 16 Pro series. However, this date announced by TSMC is the date when the company will start production for 2nm. In this sense, it is likely that the first iPhone models using 2nm processors will appear in the 17 series.

So, when will 1nm TSMC processors appear? Accordingly, the company’s goal is to start producing 1nm processors in 2030. TSMC plans to include 1 trillion transistors in a single package in this processor. TSMC will use 3D chip technology to achieve this. It is a matter of curiosity how processor technology will evolve after this record number of transistors.

Intel revealed its new technology called ExtraSS in image processing. It will compete with Nvidia DLSS and AMD FSR.

TSMC plans to reach 2nm in 2025 and 1.4nm in 2028. If the company is not late in this calendar, it will appear at the 1nm level in 2030. What is interesting is that Intel announced that it will switch to the 2nm process in 2024. Intel aims to reach the 1.8nm level in 2025. If Intel can reach the 2nm level in 2024, it will surpass TSMC at the nanometer level after a long time.

TSMC will also reach the level of 200 billion transducers in monolithic chip design, which is of great importance in artificial intelligence processors, by 2030. Currently, Nvidia’s artificial intelligence processor H100 has 80 billion transistors. Intel’s Ponte Vecchio has 100 billion transistors and AMD’s new MI300 has 146 billion transistors. In this sense, much more powerful artificial intelligence processors will appear in 2030.
