What’s next for space travel without Russia?

58 percent of the previous supply flights to the International Space Station took place with Russian rockets. That is likely to change in view of the Ukraine war.

Berlin For a long time, Russia was a reliable gateway to space – until the Ukraine war began. The costs of many missions are increasing massively, Western space agencies have to do without the Russian spaceports. For the space agencies of the West, one thing is certain: the industry will only be able to get back on course with a lot of money and time.

“The current crisis has clearly shown us where we cannot act sovereignly due to dependencies,” says the federal government’s coordinator for aerospace, Anna Christmann (Greens). “We have very consistently cut bilateral space cooperation with Russia.”

In some cases, however, Russia is withdrawing from programs on its own – or is threatening an end to international cooperation. Some of these are projects that have been in existence for decades. The Handelsblatt gives an overview of the missions that are directly affected.
