Brussels, Berlin The growing heat pump market is attracting new players. The Hessian heating manufacturer Viessmann is selling its air conditioning division to US competitor Carrier Global for twelve billion euros. The deal is evaluated very differently.

The federal government is fundamentally positive about the sale. Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck announced an examination of the planned transaction. At the same time, the Greens politician explained that the planned sale shows that climate protection technologies are the technologies of the future. Union faction vice Jens Spahn (CDU) fears a “sell-out of the German heat pump”.

Economist Marcel Fratzscher sees no reason why the deal should harm competition. He pointed out that hardly any other country makes such huge direct investments abroad as Germany.

“We should therefore not fall into protectionism when foreign companies take over German companies,” said the President of the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW) to the Handelsblatt.
