Frankfurt Stagflation – the combination of inflation and a stagnant or even shrinking economy – has been a buzzword on the markets for weeks. In a new study, DZ Bank speaks of the “spectre of stagflation” and takes a closer look at this phenomenon. The bottom line: The risk isn’t as high as many fear, but it’s rising. And if it becomes reality, it will have clear, sometimes unpleasant consequences for the capital markets.

Other experts, for example Joachim Fels, chief economist at the US fund company Pimco, which belongs to Allianz, are currently also seeing an increasing risk of stagflation. Because of the war in Ukraine, Europe is particularly at risk, even if inflation in the USA was recently higher at almost eight percent. In the euro area, prices rose by 7.5 percent in March.
