What is Iron Dome? Cost and countries using

Iron Dome is an advanced air defense system developed by Israel against short-range rockets and artillery shells. Designed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and Israel Aerospace Industries, this system has attracted worldwide attention since it entered service in 2011. It created an effective defense line especially against rockets fired from the Gaza Strip and the Lebanon border, successfully stopping 90 percent of the rockets launched. We share with you all the details of the Iron Dome, including its features, price, missile cost and the countries using it.

Iron Dome consists of three main components. These are Detection and Tracking Radar, Battle Management and Weapon Control (BMC), and Missile Firing Unit, respectively. Their duties are as follows:

  • Detection and Tracking Radar
    • This radar, developed by Elta Systems, quickly detects and tracks incoming threats. EL/M-2084 model radar has the ability to detect multiple threats simultaneously and provide data quickly to BMC.
  • Battle Management and Arms Control (BMC)
    • This system, developed by Israeli software company mPrest Systems, analyzes radar data and calculates the likely point where the rocket will land. If the rocket is perceived as a threat, the launch unit is ordered to fire the missile.
  • Missile Firing Unit
    • This unit destroys threats in the air by launching Tamir missiles with electro-optical sensors. Missiles have high maneuverability. They show a high success rate when being guided towards the goal.

Each missile of Iron Dome costs approximately 50 thousand dollars. The production cost per unit, including the launcher system, is around 50 million dollars. In order to understand how affordable it is, even if it is not exactly equivalent, let us point out that just one missile of the US-made Patriot is 4 million dollars, and the unit sales price, including the entire system, is 1 billion dollars.

Of course, the Iron Dome attracted great attention not only within Israel, but also internationally, as we mentioned. It is known that the United States purchased from this system. In addition, sales negotiations were held with countries such as Azerbaijan and Romania, and NATO and South Korea also announced that they wanted to purchase this defense system.

Iron Dome

Israel plans to take Iron Dome further and use it on naval platforms such as Sa’ar 6 class corvettes. It also aims to establish an integrated defense network to protect gas platforms together with the Barak 8 missile system.

We have shared with you all the known details about Iron Dome features, price, missile cost and the countries using it. What do you think about this issue? Don’t forget to share your opinions on the subject.
