Most older people can certainly remember their own military or community service. Even if time transfigures some things, quite a few of them would certainly describe this up to 24-month compulsory service as lost time.
Therefore, two decades after the fall of the Iron Curtain, compulsory military service and with it civilian service in Germany were rightly abolished. The days of state-mandated social commitment – at that time exclusively for young men – are over in this country. Only the debate about it comes up again and again at irregular intervals.
