In the past month, 2 different mines were detected heading towards the Bosphorus. These are presumed to be mines laid against the Russian navy off the Ukrainian city of Odessa, although there is no certainty yet as to which country they belonged to or by whom they were sent.
Defense Minister Hulusi Akar, on the other hand, said in his latest statement that some of the 400 mines on the Odessa coast may have been deliberately disconnected from the group. Akar pointed out that if the mines were dragged into the Bosphorus, Turkey could request a minesweeper from NATO if its power to intervene was insufficient, and that with this, the invalidation of the Montreux Convention might be aimed.
In the statement, it was said:
We have doubts whether the mines were left intentionally. There are those who say that these mines may have been left as part of a plan for NATO minesweepers to enter the Black Sea. To squeeze us. But we will stick to Montreux rules. We will not let warships into the Black Sea.
Of course, our Western NATO allies allegedly did this by the Russian military. It is even said that he may have used his own mines, not the mines in Odessa.
