Berlin Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser (SPD) sees good chances for the amendment to the Basic Law she is aiming for, in order to give the federal government more powers in cyber defense. “My impression is that there is also strong support in the federal states for the federal government to take the leading role in cyber security,” she said.

“Only the federal government can effectively counter complex, cross-border dangers from cyber attacks.” With the National Cyber Defense Center and the bundled skills of the security authorities there is “a great deal of expertise”.

According to Faeser, there is currently a “high risk” of Russian cyber attacks as a result of the Ukraine war. “There is ongoing cyber activity that affects our businesses, but also critical infrastructure,” she said. “Hackers are obviously looking for vulnerabilities in order to install malware.” That’s why the protective measures have been “significantly strengthened”.
