As September 12, 2023 approaches, the excitement of Apple fans continues to increase. We will see new Apple products at the event to be held tomorrow. However, when it comes to the accessories side, we may encounter a slightly different situation. The launch cases that Apple once made famous may never be released again. Here are the details…
Apple wants to take more environmentally friendly steps: Silicone cases will be history!
Apple has made many innovations within the scope of its environmental footprint project. The brand, which aims to make the parts used in its products such as phones and computers more environmentally friendly, has taken steps in this regard. Apple, which uses more environmentally friendly and recyclable materials in its new products, also accelerates the recycling movement with systems such as second-hand purchasing and selling new products through exchange.
However, these regulations must not have provided the desired level of environmentalism. For this reason, the technology giant produces silicone cases, etc. decided to make a new regulation about its products. According to the leaks in this context, the brand plans to stop using silicone rubber and fluoroelastomer accessories and use accessories made from more environmentally friendly new generation materials instead.
Silicone rubber and fluoroelastomer materials are plastic-based, so they decompose very slowly in nature, and with the worldwide consumption craze, they are very affordable and are products that users buy once, use for a while, and then throw them to the back of the drawer. Although Apple cannot prevent the consumption frenzy, it wants to follow a different role by changing the materials used in production.
Of course, this change is not limited to covers only. In addition, accessories such as Apple Watch sports bands, Solo Loop and AirTag Loop are expected to not be silicone-based. However, the use of plastic rubber will continue in products such as Apple Watch standard straps.
There are actually two big criticisms Apple will receive here. First, why isn’t “leather” used in products like the Apple Watch? The answer that can be given by the brand to this is “cost”. The faux leather alternative does not make much sense since it still contains “plastic”. The second issue is that although the “designs” of iPhone models do not change to the same degree every year, the cases of the previous model cannot be used due to small size differences. It wouldn’t be wrong to say that this triggers a huge waste.
