Berlin The notorious head of the Wagner mercenary group, Yevgeny Prigoshin, is concerned. Russian prospects in the war against Ukraine are “foggy,” he said recently via the online network “Wkontakte”. The Russian troops would probably have “only a few weeks” left before the Ukrainian counterattack began. One must now concentrate on “holding the frontline” and “forget all disputes, insults and everything else”. The intrigues “interfere with fighting”.

The appeal for reconciliation is new. So far, Prigozhin has clearly enjoyed his role as provocateur. Since the beginning of the Russian war of aggression, he has publicly criticized the Moscow army leadership. Prigozhin remained unmolested, although a law provides for long-term imprisonment for “denigration of the armed forces”.

This year, however, there were increasing signs that the Department of Defense had the upper hand. The mercenary boss seems to have passed the peak of his influence in the Kremlin.
