Brussels After years of debate, the US and the EU have found common ground on China policy. Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD), US security adviser Jake Sullivan, EU Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen: they have all been talking about derisking lately.
The term is intended to differentiate itself from decoupling and make it clear that the West is not interested in cutting all economic relations with China. Instead, the focus is now on limiting the biggest risks.
This is good news for the German economy, which has invested billions in China. Less good news is that there are still significant differences as to what exactly requires derisking. On closer inspection, the common denominator turns out to be a minimal consensus.
