US special with experts on current election issues

Dusseldorf The largest economy in the world, the oldest existing democracy in the world will vote in a few days. The midterm elections on November 8th are about the majority of both chambers of deputies and thus about decisive decisions for economic and domestic policy – and the presidential elections in two years.

In a six-part special series “HB Today – the US special on the 2022 midterm elections”, the Handelsblatt on Wednesday, November 2nd, examines key questions: Is the US threatened with an even greater division? What does the USA want to achieve in foreign policy and what do they expect from Germany? Why is the US doing better economically than Europe right now? What are the main election themes? And what election result do the financial markets want?

The hosts Nicole Bastian and Katharina Kort will discuss this with, among others, the former German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel, the German-American political scientist Cathryn Clüver Ashbrook, the book author Sandra Navidi, the former US diplomat Jeffrey Rathke and the professors Herbert Kitschelt and Harm Bandholz – as well as with the Handelsblatt USA correspondents. And of course we discuss the results of the election the day after election night.

“It’s a knife-edge choice,” says Clüver Ashbrook in the first of six episodes. Should Republicans win a majority in one or both houses of Parliament, President Joe Biden would be blocked in key areas for two years.

Handelsblatt Washington correspondent and author Annett Meiritz explains why these midterm elections revolve around the current and previous presidents and the future presidents more than ever before. And she looks at some of the most compelling one-off races in Pennsylvania and Arizona, and what they say about the midterms overall.
