Switzerland remains tough in the dispute over arms deliveries to Ukraine and Germany: on Tuesday, after talks with Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Berlin, Federal President Alain Berset again referred to his country’s neutrality, which bans such deliveries.
However, the Russian attack is strongly condemned and Ukraine is being helped with humanitarian and reconstruction measures, he added. “Everyone is doing what they can to the best of their ability,” he said. Nobody can ask Switzerland to give up its neutrality. Chancellor Scholz had previously emphasized in general terms that the turning point was forcing everyone to rethink. Scholz confirmed that he spoke to Berset about the subject.
At the same time, Scholz praised the fact that Switzerland had joined western sanctions against Russia. Berset pointed out that assets of Russian oligarchs worth 7.5 billion Swiss francs had been confiscated. Close cooperation between Western countries is important in this area.
