Washington More jobs than expected were created on the US labor market last month. In December 2022, 223,000 new non-farm jobs were added, after 256,000 in November, the Washington government announced on Friday.

Economists polled by Reuters had only expected 200,000 new jobs in December. The separate unemployment rate fell surprisingly to 3.5 from 3.6 percent in November.

The central bank Fed is challenged because it wants to curb the high inflation in the country and at the same time want to cool down the overheated labor market with higher interest rates. In December, for example, the Fed raised the key interest rate by half a percentage point – to the new range of 4.25 to 4.50 percent.

That’s what economists say about the robust US job market

In the meantime, the US Federal Reserve sees considerable progress in the fight against high inflation and, after a series of sharp interest rate hikes, intends to steer a less aggressive monetary policy course in future.
