US debt drama overshadows G7 summit – concerns about default growing

Washington At a pivotal moment in US foreign policy, Joe Biden was present at half strength. His visit to the G7 summit in Japan was overshadowed by the dispute over America’s debt ceiling.

Biden had to say goodbye several times to rounds with the heads of state and government of the G7 industrialized nations, because the situation in Washington is coming to a head: On Friday, the negotiators in the USA interrupted their debt talks.

Negotiations between the US President and the chief negotiator for the opposition Republicans, Kevin McCarthy, are now scheduled to continue on Monday. McCarthy announced this on Sunday.

The US President had previously called McCarthy on his return journey from the G7 summit in Hiroshima, Japan. The Republican rated the conversation as “productive.”
