Russian Ambassador: Can reduce number of US journalists

The Russian ambassador to the US, Anatoly Antonov, suggests reducing the number of US journalists in Russia. He speaks on Russian state television Channel One against the background of the arrest in Russia of the reporter of the “Wall Street Journal” Evan Gershkovich. “The Americans have threatened us with retaliatory measures if we don’t release Gershkovich in the near future,” says Antonov. “We’ll see how they will behave.”

The US always insists on reciprocity. “Perhaps it is time to show reciprocity and reduce the number of American journalists working in Moscow and across Russia to the number (of Russian journalists) working in Washington and New York.” Russia accuses Gershkovich to have engaged in espionage under the guise of journalism. The Wall Street Journal rejects the allegation that the United States is demanding the reporter’s release.
