Ukraine war: Lyman & Bachmut – The strategic problems of the Russians

Berlin The towns of Lyman and Bakhmut in Ukraine’s Donetsk region are separated by more than 80 kilometers of front lines, but the situation on the ground couldn’t be more different. The fighting in Donbass has meanwhile concentrated on these two strategically important cities. Intensity increases as both parties look to gain land before winter sets in.

The small town of Lyman is an important junction of railway traffic to the west of Donbass. Russian military bloggers fear Ukraine’s advances could mean defeat on the ground is imminent. Several of them, as well as prominent military correspondents, report further advances by Ukrainian troops to the west, north and north-east of Lyman.
