The use of atomic bombs: During the Cold War, that was an oppressive but also abstract idea. Then the specter of a nuclear apocalypse was all but forgotten. But suddenly the threat is omnipresent again.

Vladimir Putin, his government and the state-controlled Russian media are speaking ever more openly about the possible use of nuclear weapons: “All relevant decisions have been made,” Putin now claimed in Moscow. And the state news agency Ria Nowosti further quoted him as saying: “We will not boast about it. We’ll use them if we have to. And I want everyone to know about it.” Russia has all the necessary tools, which no other country can claim, said the Russian ruler.
