Twitter will not allow using the platform without an account under a new decision. The company, which reacted by applying temporary access restrictions to anonymous users, said that this situation will continue for a while. According to Elon Musk, anonymous logins are suspended against “data looting.”
Twitter has been suspended without an account
Twitter does not allow browsing without an account login on the platform for a while. Visitors cannot access tweets and profiles via web browsers on both desktop and mobile devices.
Elon Musk said that this name was taken to protect platform security. The details of what Musk calls “data loot” are currently unclear. However, considering that Twitter APIs are paid, we think it is done to prevent unauthorized collection of content on the platform.
Before Twitter was acquired by Elon Musk, it offered its application programming interface (API) service for free. Thanks to APIs, it was possible to use tweets and some data on the platform for free. However, Musk has asked companies that want to access the APIs to pay more than $40,000 per month.
Aqueel Miqdad, a software engineer at Twitter, said the access restriction for unaccounted visitors is temporary. In the tweet shared by Miqdad, he stated that Twitter will be reopened to everyone and will be a free environment. Those who used the platform without an account could not hide their surprise at the sudden change.
The access restriction initially appeared to be aimed at companies using data from Twitter to train AI models. In addition, such measures encourage visitors to create accounts and increase the number of active users of Twitter.
In 2015, Twitter announced that around 500 million people visit the platform without logging in per month.
