Türkiye is becoming a driverless vehicle center!

Minister of Industry and Technology Mehmet Fatih Kacır announced that Turkey has taken an important step to make a major breakthrough in the mobility sector and play a leading role in driverless vehicle technologies. With the Open Innovation Autonomous Vehicle Development and Testing Platform Project (OPINA), Turkey will provide infrastructure support to national and international organizations in the field of developing autonomous and communicating vehicle technologies.

The project was implemented with a budget of 5 million euros within the scope of the European Union-supported Competitive Sectors Programme. OPINA will provide the testing, integration and certification infrastructure required for the products and services of the mobility ecosystem by offering a public innovation platform that tests software with virtual simulations. At the same time, it aims to obtain international accreditation and conduct regulation tests in Turkey.

This project is an important step taken within the scope of the “Mobility Vehicles and Technologies Strategy Roadmap” announced by Turkey in 2022. The road map aims to increase the market share of electric and rechargeable hybrid vehicles to 35 percent and the localization rate to 75 percent by 2030.

In addition, it is aimed for Turkey to become the European leader and among the top 5 worldwide in electric, connected and autonomous commercial vehicle production. To achieve this goal, the Ministry of Industry and Technology supports many projects in the mobility sector with the Technology-Focused Industry Move Program.

Support is provided for 38 investment projects worth more than 32 billion lira, from smart urban electric public transportation vehicles to advanced driving support systems, from smart camera systems to be used in autonomous vehicles to electric vehicle charging ecosystems.

With OPINA, Türkiye aims to become an important center in autonomous and connected vehicle technologies. This center will contribute to the transformation and competitiveness of the sector and will lead the emergence of successful initiatives in this field from Turkey.
