Turkey Failed in Sustainable Agriculture

The World Food Sustainability Index, which was created with data compiled by The Economist, showed that Turkey fell short of sustainable agriculture. Turkey ranked 60th among 78 countries in this field.

While sustainability in food is of great importance for countries and the world, “The Economist”World Food Sustainability Index”, included important data that is a critical warning for Turkey. While Sweden, Japan and Canada are in the first three places in the index created with 2021 data, Turkey could not even enter the top 25 among the world countries.

The index, which covers 78 countries in total and was prepared under the headings of food loss and waste, agriculture and nutrition challenges, scored countries both in these headings and in terms of overall food sustainability. In scoring out of 100 Turkey’s average score is 66 declared as. Turkey, 27th out of 78 countries listed.

What is the status of sustainability in food in Turkey?

According to the shared data, Turkey scored 69 points in food loss and waste, 60 points in sustainable agriculture, and 69 points in nutritional difficulties. With these scores, Turkey ranks 23rd among 78 countries in the fight against food loss and waste. 60th in sustainable agriculture and ranked 29th in nutritional difficulties.

Turkey’s biggest problem in sustainable agriculture, which is ranked lowest, was water management. Turkey, scored 0 out of 100 points in water management. However, land use scored 44 points, while productivity scored 4 points. Another big problem of Turkey was about nutrition. It was also able to achieve 18 points in investment opportunities in sustainable agriculture. While Turkey scored 77 in healthy life expectancy, it scored 48 in physical activity and 23 in prevalence of overnutrition.
