TikTok will tag government-linked accounts

The Chinese social media company announced on its website that it will now label state-controlled media organizations. TikTok stated that it took this decision as part of the ‘state media policy’ it developed to help users understand where the videos they watch came from, especially in times of war.

Saying that it has accelerated this policy due to the war in Ukraine, TikTok said, state-controlled media outlets will tag content posted on their accounts explained. The company also shared the information that it is working with 50 experts from 20 countries to accurately determine which accounts and contents belong to government media.

Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube also tag state-affiliated media outlets. For example, in all the videos on RT’s official YouTube channel “The RT broadcaster is partially or fully funded by Russia” while the sentence is included; Twitter, on the other hand, has placed the phrase “media associated with the Russian state” both in the tweets and in the account.
