Threatening strikes at Deutsche Bahn and Lufthansa – is the holiday season turning into a nightmare?

Dusseldorf After the pandemic years, many Germans feel like traveling again. The tourism companies expect an increase of twelve percent compared to the time before Corona. But labor disputes at Deutsche Bahn and Lufthansa could shake up the industry this summer.

The railway union EVG has announced that it will let its members vote on an indefinite strike. It would be the first for at least ten years – and would not only hit travelers hard, but also the economy. “Many companies depend on the transport of goods,” says Handelsblatt reporter Jens Koenen in the podcast. In the chemical industry, for example, there are certain dangerous goods that can only be transported by rail.

There could also be strikes at Lufthansa if the peace obligation in the collective bargaining between the airline and the Cockpit Association ends in July. “The beneficiary could be the bus travel provider Flixbus, which is already positioned as an alternative for customers,” says Koenen.
