This ship has solar panels instead of sails!

While saying goodbye to fossil fuels, the use of electricity in vehicles has increased significantly. In the sector, which is led by electric cars and motorcycles, airplanes and ships are also starting to benefit from electric power. The last example of this came from the Norwegian company Hurtigruten.

Meet the most efficient ship

Hurtigruten recently announced plans for the first-of-its-kind zero-emission ship. The electrically powered cruise ship is equipped with sails with solar panels to store energy from wind and sun in powerful batteries.

“Sea Zero,” the company’s first concept with zero emissions, is expected to be the world’s most energy-efficient cruise ship. The first electric cruise ship to set sail in 2030 will also break many industry firsts to harness wind and sun while on the sea for a truly zero-emissions experience.

The company, which wants to benefit from the wind as well as the solar energy on the sea, includes movable panels that act as sails. These three moving wings are formed with 1500 m² of solar panels with a total wind surface of 750 m².

The electric solar powered cruise ship concept is 135 meters long. It is stated that the ship, which has 270 cabins, was designed to accommodate 500 passengers. The company is currently focused on battery manufacturing, engine technology, body design and other sustainable practices that can reduce energy consumption.

Hurtigruten also continues to work to reduce the consumption of onboard hotel operations, which account for 50 percent of the ship’s total energy use. With the technology they will develop, the company aims to save 50 percent energy compared to existing models.

The Hurtigruten Sea Zero concept is just at the beginning. It is expected that the electric motor ship, where the works are continuing at full speed, will meet with water in 2030. So what do you think about this ship, which will get its power from solar and wind panels? You can share your views with us in the comments section.
