This is how the EU could compensate for a Russian gas supply freeze

Dusseldorf In the struggle to find the right way to deal with Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, one question keeps popping up: Can the European Union (EU) boycott Russian natural gas supplies? The hope is that without the income from its energy exports, Russia will not be able to finance the war against Ukraine in the long term.

The concern is that without Russian gas, the economy in this country will collapse more than it did during the corona crisis. There are discussions among scientists as to whether this would be manageable. A study by the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW) recently came to the conclusion that Germany, at least, could become independent of Russian gas this year.

The head of the German Economic Institute (IW), Michael Hüther, on the other hand, warned that an abrupt gas embargo would mean a production standstill of two and a half years in central areas.

So how long will it take Europe to free itself from its energy dependence on Russia? When would a gas boycott be justifiable? And what would have to happen for that?
