Berlin A few days ago, Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD) announced new spending requests. Because of the shortage of medicines, health insurance companies are to pay 50 percent more for certain medicines in the future. The idea sounds logical, but there is a catch: the financing is in the stars.

The cash registers are already unable to meet their expenses. In the coming year, the deficit of the statutory health insurance (GKV) would have amounted to 17 billion euros. The federal government had to step in with aid, but even this does not fully cover the deficit. The result: the additional contribution will rise to a new record high in the coming year.

And this increase will not be the last. In the years that follow, the deficit in statutory health insurance is likely to continue to grow. A report by the IGES Institute on behalf of the health insurance company DAK-Gesundheit predicted a minus of 30 billion euros by 2025 in the summer.
