Scottish adventurers Chris and Julie Ramsey completed the world’s first “Pole to Pole EV” electric vehicle trip, covering 27 thousand 358 kilometers from the Magnetic North Pole to the South Pole. The couple reached their destination on December 15, but were able to share their news after establishing a satellite connection. This feat was achieved using a Nissan Ariya e-4ORCE electric vehicle modified by Icelandic specialist Arctic Trucks.

The vehicle was modified with larger tyres, but this caused the range to drop to between 240 and 300 kilometers from the original 437 kilometer mark. For the Arctic and Antarctic, Ramsey developed practical methods to warm the vehicle’s battery, but this additional load resulted in reduced range. The couple charged the vehicle using methods such as wind turbine, solar hybrid charging solution and gasoline generator.

The project aims to prove that electric vehicles can replace powerful vehicles powered by diesel or gasoline in polar regions. Additionally, the couple’s experience at the Mongol Rally, which they completed in 2017 with a modified Nissan Leaf Acenta, was also shared.
