Frankfurt When millions of German tenants soon find their utility bills in their mailboxes, one point will catch their eye in particular: heating in German households has become significantly more expensive. This is not only due to the rising energy costs, but also to the new CO2 pricing, which has been in effect since January 1, 2021. 25 euros per tonne of CO2 will be due this year – and the surcharge is expected to climb further to 55 euros in the coming years by 2025.
For many tenants this means a significant financial burden. Because the old government had decided that they had to bear the additional costs alone. But that could change again under the new traffic light coalition, which should be in place in December.
