Dusseldorf The corona pandemic has left deep scars in German gastronomy. Sales and the number of employees collapsed because restaurants and pubs had to close for months and only a few guests showed up afterwards – for fear of the virus. Although the government was able to buffer some things with its aid packages, it was still not enough for some companies: They closed up shop forever.
Not all catering establishments were equally affected: restaurants and snack bars were still doing relatively well. But every fourth discotheque gave up and every fifth pub around the corner.
